Senior Odyssey began as a community-based research project for adults aged 60+ to promote cognitive health and well-being through mindful participation in creative problem-solving activities. The program was developed in concert with an existing program, Odyssey of the Mind (OOTM) and funded by the National Institute on Aging.
At a time in life when older adults have retired from paid employment, cultural norms have many believing this is a time for leisure, with only infrequent opportunities to be stimulated intellectually. Senior Odyssey provides an opportunity for seniors to engage both intellectually and socially by immersing themselves in a variety of mentally stimulating activities - decision-making, creativity, collaboration, evaluation of ideas, and competition with others. Using a prescribed curriculum, participants in Senior Odyssey tap into their personal wealth of knowledge and life experience, and share with their team members their ideas to solve creative problems. Along the way they can have a lot of fun too!
